YORK WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

REAL PEOPLE,
REAL WEDDINGS,
REAL MEMORIES.
Candid, documentary wedding photography in York for couples who want the day to feel real
If you’re searching for a York wedding photographer, I’m going to guess two things are true. You want photos that feel real, and you’re quietly dreading anything that sounds like posing.
Most couples I work with say they feel awkward on camera. They don’t want a wedding day that turns into a shoot, or to spend hours being steered about while everyone else has a drink and gets on with it.
I’m Sam Chipman, a York based documentary wedding photographer. I shoot weddings in a calm, low fuss way, so you can stay present with your people while I keep an eye on the moments you’ll miss in the moment. We’ll do a short block of portraits in good light, with simple direction, then you’re straight back to your day.

Want to see how I approach weddings?: My Work
I’m Sam, and you’re very welcome here.
If you’re looking for authentic moments and a photographer who works in an unobtrusive and documentary style, then I might just be your human.
You’ll probably enjoy working with me if:
- You want natural photos that capture real moments, not staged ones
- You care more about atmosphere and connection than perfect details
- You want portraits that feel like you, without being dragged around the venue
- You want a calm presence who won’t take over your day
If that sounds like your kind of wedding, I’d love to hear what you’re planning.

PLANNING YOUR YORK WEDDING

So, you’ve finally got that ring on your finger? Or put the ring on that finger? Now for the planning.
You want to make sure you capture the real stuff. The hugs. The chaos. The quiet bits you do not notice until you see them back. No awkward posing marathons. No constant interrupting. Just your day, as it actually happened.
How I work on a wedding day
I work like a guest with a camera.
I watch.
I anticipate.
I stay close enough to catch the good stuff, without making it about me.
What you can expect:
Optional highlight film
If you want photo and video without extra crew or fuss, you can add a short highlight film.
Calm presence
I do not shout. I do not take over. I keep things moving when it matters.
Real moments first
The story lives in the in between. That’s what I hunt.
Portraits without the cringe
We’ll do a short block. Simple direction. Natural light. Ten to fifteen minutes. Then you’re back with your mates.
Next day sneak peeks
You get a few the next day, so you are not waiting weeks just to see something.
You’ll probably get on with me if:
- You care more about moments than Pinterest perfection
- You want to spend your day with your people, not stuck doing photos
- You want a photographer who blends in and stays switched on
York wedding venues I know well
York has some brilliant wedding venues, and each one has its own rhythm and lighting quirks. If you’re getting married at one of these, I already know how the day typically flows and where the best light tends to be.
Woolas Barn
Lodge Farm Weddings
Howsham Hall
Woodstock Weddings
The Grand, York
The Hospitium
Thicket Priory
Hornington Manor
Sandburn Hall
The Normans
If your venue isn’t on that list, it’s still fine. I shoot at new venues all the time, and I always arrive early enough to do a quick walkaround, check the light, and get my bearings before anything starts.

HOW MUCH DOES YORK WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY COST?
York wedding photography prices vary depending on date, coverage, and what you want included. Most couples book full day coverage because that’s what tells the story properly, from the nerves at the start through to the energy later on.
When you enquire, I’ll send my pricing and help you figure out what coverage fits your plans, so you’re not guessing or trying to compare photographers based on hours alone.
If you want a quick starting point, you can include it here:
Full day wedding photography starts at £2,000
HOW I BECAME A YORK WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER
By accident.
Becoming a professional wedding photographer was something I never expected. With my background in acting and performing, I picked up photography as a hobby during one of my summer breaks from drama school. When some friends asked me to be their photographer for their wedding, I saw the joy that came from seeing their memories preserved, and I knew that this was what I wanted to do. From then on, I continue to provide couples with lasting memories through photography.
Professional wedding photography is all about creating memories and telling stories. It requires incredible attention to detail and an ability to capture emotions, expressions, and moments in time. Just like shooting a theatrical production, every image taken should be meaningful and evoke emotion that will live on long after the wedding day has passed.

There are so, so many more brilliant venues that I couldn’t possibly name all of them. If you want advice on how good wedding venues on your shortlist are for photography feel free to reach out and I’ll happily lend my opinion.

WHO IS THE BEST YORK WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER?
Am I the best York Wedding photographer? I’ve always been far too humble to make such a claim. But my couples always rave about my work.
Searching for the perfect wedding photographer in the York region can be quite daunting. Take your time to browse through the offerings and evaluate portfolios to pick out a York wedding photographer who will capture all the special moments on your big day. Why not read my article, How To Choose Your Wedding Photographer to give you an idea of what to consider to make your mind up?
At the end of the day, it comes down to three things – for me at least. Price, style, and personality.
Firstly, decide on a budget and allocate around 15% of it towards your wedding photographer. Secondly, get an idea of the type of photos you would like by doing some research into different styles and making a Pinterest board or saving images you love. Lastly, make sure to get to know your wedding photographer on a personal level – have a Zoom call and make sure you two get along! Your wedding photographer will be with you throughout the entire day so it’s essential to have chemistry with them and feel comfortable in their presence.

ALEXIA & MARC
TITHE BARN, NORTH YORKSHIRE
Sam captured each moment so beautifully. There were some really special moments in the day that Sam photographed and we had no idea until we received the photos and we’re so incredibly grateful for that.
Sam told the story of our wedding so beautifully and we’re so pleased with the results. Thank you so much Sam!

JULIE & JOOLS
CUSTOM WEBSITE
On the day, Sam was everything we could have hoped for and more! He was super professional, uber organised but still with that smiley, cheeky chappy persona.
When the photos came back to us there were so many magic moments that we hadn’t seen and were unaware were happening! All in all, the day was perfect and Sam was a MASSIVE part of it, not only being a good friend, lending a shoulder to cry happy tears on, soothing the nerves by cracking a joke

HARRIET & NICO
MIDDLETON LODGE, NORTH YORKSHIRE
From our first meeting to saying goodbye the night of our wedding, Sam was great. His communication throughout, from the actual package for our wedding to our pre-wedding shoot- there was nothing too much trouble. If you are looking for a photographer- this is your man!
We received some special surprises on the day and some sneak peek photos the day after our wedding which we didn’t expect so soon. Everyone has already commented on how beautiful the photographs are.
