SASKIA & PATRICK – DIY FARM WEDDING

DIY Farm Wedding

DIY FARM WEDDING

There’s something truly special about having a DIY farm wedding. As a wedding photographer, I love how these types of weddings blend rustic charm with a deeply personal touch, creating an atmosphere that feels relaxed, intimate, and completely unique to the couple. Whether it’s on your own family farm or a venue you’ve hired, the flexibility and character of a farm setting really make for an unforgettable celebration.

One of the best things about a farm wedding is the freedom it gives you to design your day exactly as you want it. There’s often no set formula—you can get married in an open field with panoramic countryside views, set up a marquee in the paddock, or transform a barn into a magical reception space with string lights and personal touches. It’s a photographer’s dream because there are so many opportunities for beautiful, natural light and wide, sweeping landscape shots.

The outdoor spaces really shine during golden hour—there’s something about the soft light over open fields that creates the perfect backdrop for capturing those quiet, intimate moments between a couple. Plus, having the freedom to set up outdoor seating or even lawn games for guests makes it easy to capture relaxed, candid moments that reflect the laid-back vibe of a farm wedding.

Farm weddings are often deeply personal too. Being on a family property, or in a place that feels connected to your life, brings an extra layer of meaning to the celebration. It’s always a privilege to document weddings in such heartfelt, down-to-earth settings, where the couple’s personality is infused into every detail.

“We chose Patrick’s family farm as it is a place that means a lot to us, has amazing views and allows us to make our wedding day what we want it to be”

For their wedding reception, Sas and Patrick decided to pay tribute to their engagement by incorporating tipi tents, a nod to the camping trip where they got engaged. The whole vibe of their day was boutique-style, filled with thoughtful, unique touches that really reflected their personalities.

What I love about their approach is how much of the wedding they did themselves, with the help of their families. They had a few days between the tipi tents going up and the big day, so they all spent that time getting everything set up. It wasn’t just about the wedding day itself – the whole week became a family effort, culminating in a more informal party the day after to make the most of the beautiful setup.

The DIY touches were everywhere. They made a lot of things by hand – from the cake table to the indoor bar – and Sas’s mum baked the wedding cake while Patrick’s mum crafted the buttonholes. The couple even arranged the flowers themselves. It was a real team effort, and you could see all those personal touches throughout the day, making it such a genuine celebration of who they are.

Food, drink, and music were at the heart of the day. They worked with Chef Samuel Keys to create canapés inspired by places they had traveled together, and their bar served cocktails they personally selected. Patrick had his suits custom-made, while Sas collaborated with Hidden Botanics to design her perfect bouquet.

Their wedding was more than just a party – it was a beautifully crafted celebration, filled with love, family, and details that made the day truly their own.
